“The Disintegration Loops” is a unique sound collage that owes its impressive tone to the unusual compositional technique. It relies mainly on skilfully cut and specially treated sounds from magnetic tapes originating from the author’s archives which create an emotional landscape suspended in time and reality. Incidentally, the completion of the recording coincided with the 9/11 attacks, which Basinski witnessed from a rooftop in Brooklyn. The artist’s experiments resulted in a unique eulogy for the burning Twin Towers, and the artwork accompanying the record features Basinski’s footage of the New York City skyline in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. During this year’s closing concert, the composition will be performed by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Boon Hua Lien, in the presence of William Basinski himself. Before the concert, William Basinski will greet the audience with a brief introduction during which he will talk about his composition.
